I just came across some interesting pieces of information about the new features for battle.net that Blizzard are working on. Firstly, this is the general summary of the new battle.net that is posted with the majority of their job positions:

The new Battle.net is a full-featured online game service that will deliver the ultimate social and competitive experience for Blizzard Entertainment gamers everywhere. Designed specifically around Blizzard Entertainment titles, Battle.net will include a complete set of around-the-game features including a state-of-the-art matchmaking system, achievement system, social networking features, structured competitive play options, a marketplace, and much more. Our vision is to create an environment where gamers can compete online, develop an online persona, and stay connected to friends and the rest of the community while enjoying our games.

The roles of “Multiplayer Systems Designer” and “Tournament Systems Designer” also include:

Working with development teams and the Battle.net team on multiplayer systems design, tournament and ladder design and interface and online game design. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in multiplayer game design, a passion for competitive gaming and an enthusiasm for online communities.

If you would like more information on any positions working for Blizzard, head over to the Blizzard Careers web pages.

Blizzard have stated that the next-gen MMO won't necessarily be a subscription based model like World of Warcraft. The mention of a marketplace built into battle.net could potentially mean that Blizzard will be experimenting with micropayments. I doubt that Blizzard would go as far as many of the free to play MMOs on the market, which offer a significant advantage to those that pay. We can however expect to see Blizzard making a lot more cosmetic features and virtual items available on battle.net for a fee.

It is extremely likely that Blizzards new game will incorporate eSports. In South Korea games are regularly broadcast on TV. Blizzard are really pushing for this mainstream adoption of Esports in the West. It's a massive money making opportunity just waiting to explode, and Blizzard want to be there at the heart of it all.

In order to make a successful eSports game, each playable character will need to be balanced against each other. This has been a big problem for Blizzards other MMO, World of Warcraft. Nearly every patch the classes have to be rebalanced because of the new gear they have got access to from PvE. One way Blizzard could solve this problem, is to significantly reduce the importance of PvE in character improvement. That doesn't mean removing PvE, what it means is that a different system could be used rather than killing a boss and looting an item that improves your characters stats.

One soon to be released game, shows the kind of thing I think we can expect to see from Blizzard, that game is Global Agenda.

Jeff Kaplan and Rob Pardo, both involved in the development of Blizzards next-gen MMO, were spotted at E3 showing a particular interest in Global Agenda. They wont have just turned up to have a look for some fun, they were on a mission to see what their competitors are up to.

I have been doing a little reverse ip on the Blizzard servers, seeing if we may be able to predict where the website for the next-gen mmo may go up. All the earlier ip ranges tend to be world of warcraft related, the eu armory is also before this list.

It's pure speculation but I would guess that it's more likely for one of the "Not Found" or "Blank Page" listings to be the server that they will use. The site is not likely to go up officially until Blizzcon. The Cataclysm website went live just as Blizzcon 09 started.
